How to find your first customer

updated on 06 May 2024

If you’ve just started your first solo business, try these tactics to finding your first customer:

  1. Post your goals on social media. Accountability works wonders.
  2. Create genuine connections with people by DM’ing similar solopreneurs on Twitter/X asking questions about their business and journey. Be authentic and don’t lead with a sales pitch. The goal is to plant seeds early on as these connections pay dividends down the line.
  3. Test your offering with a free or low cost package. I started out by offering Founders Owl consulting at just $7. This helped build trust, credibility and vital feedback to improve my services early on.
  4. Share screenshots of first sales with 1-3 tips that speak to your audience. What would you have done differently? How can they copy the best bits? What lessons have you learnt? This builds momentum.
  5. Reply to peoples posts about problems you can solve. The public nature of this will will increase your exposure and may lead to a direct sale.
